Chapter 44: A loud invasion

“Third brother, I don’t have any opinions if you want to vent your desires, however, don’t dawdle over important business! If you don’t change this character of yours, you will one day end up dying on the belly of a woman!” A troll, who was sitting on the other end of the tent while wearing a set of firm cloth armor, knitted his brows. Its tone had carried a trace of reproach in its voice.

“Sigh! Second brother! It’s not like you’re unaware that we have stayed in this godforsaken place for almost 3 months now! And yet, you won’t allow me to see some action! All I do the entire day besides eating is sleeping! Who could tolerate this?” The third brother, whose desires were clearly aroused, suddenly grumbled in a helpless manner.

“Sigh, your ability isn’t below me or big brother, but your personality is just… Nevermind, forget it. I’ll allow you to cast your inhibitions aside and enjoy tomorrow. Our informant reported that the defense of the human’s border town is loosening and that its only variable had left the town. Do you understand what I mean?”

“Ohhhh?! Is second brother trying to say that the time has arrived??” The third brother, who had been indistinctly glaring at the area near the cat-eared girls’ chest, had instantly perked up. His large, creased face was filled with excitement and bloodlust.

“That’s right.”

“That’s great!! It’s already been 3 months since my ax spilled blood! I have long since wanted to chop down a few humans and have some fun with them!” The third brother was happily making some threatening gestures.

“You better not screw it up! Whether we succeed or fail will depend on how we do this. This will affect whether the three months we stayed in this forsaken place is worth it or not, remember the expectations the chieftain has on me,” He said as he looked at his third brother in his family and the extremely impatient demeanor he possessed, the troll slowly heaved a sigh.

“I got it! While I’m no good at being in charge, have I ever let big brother and you down in slaughtering? Just be at ease and leave it to me! I’ll be the vanguard and lead the soldiers onwards!” The third brother of the trolls was filled with excitement as he waved his arm.

“Mhm, but we have to be discreet in tomorrow’s operation. We need to shut down that damned barrier… The informant already told us about the maintenance period that the sacred barrier will be experiencing, during that time-frame, it would be intermittently down. When the time comes, he will open the city gate. We will send a small team inside to destroy the core of the barrier, after which, the slaughter can begin.” The second brother narrowed his eyes.

“Eh? That troublesome? Why don’t we simply take advantage of this timing to send our soldiers into the town, wouldn’t that be better? Why do we have to go through this much trouble?” The third brother puckered his mouth in a somewhat discontented manner.

“That won’t do. Let me warn you first, you’d better not act recklessly! If the city gates are wide open for too long, it would attract too much attention. At that time, our insider’s identity would be exposed. The value that this insider has given us isn’t as small as simply occupying a border town… Rather than braving the risk of exposure, why don’t we pretend that we were just launching a simple siege? We can even push the fault of the city gate’s opening to the dark knights…” The smile of the second brother gradually turned into an extremely sinister one.

“Oh! I understand! So second brother, you’ll assign me to lead the infiltration team tonight, right?” The third brother moved his head closer to his second brother eagerly as he said this.

“That’s out of the question. The way you handle things is too rash and careless. I already have a candidate in mind for tonight’s operation.” The second brother shook his head back and forth, and with raised eyebrows.

“Ah? You couldn’t possibly mean the blockhead, fourth brother, right?” The third brother was slightly stunned.

“Save that until you can defeat the fourth brother. In the battle of Long Mound, your fourth brother single-handedly fought 4 gold knights and 17 silver knights, all while not falling behind. Despite being in a disadvantageous situation, he had even captured 5 silver knights alive. When can you achieve such an accomplishment?” The second brother narrowed its eyes as he countered his question with another one.

“Tch… That’s only because it wasn’t me on the scene back then. The human troops were so weak that it would collapse at the single blow. Fourth brother was just lucky to have gotten such a bargain, that’s all…” The third brother cast his head aside and muttered in a stubborn manner.

“Alright, hurry up and rest now. If the operation goes well tonight, we will launch an offensive tomorrow.”

“Tch, there’s no role for me again…” The third brother of the trolls puckered its lips in an extremely dissatisfied manner. He then directed his cruel gaze towards the cat-eared girls that were kneeling, shivering, and lowering their heads in the ground.

It was very evident that he wanted a medium to release his resentment and anger.

“Oh, that’s right. Third brother, I recall you saying that a small kitten ran away?”

“Yes! That kitten was simply the highest grade! I didn’t expect that it would actually run away… Hmph! If your father catches her in the cities, you can see how I’m going to sort her out!” As he thought up to this point, the third brother ferociously spat out a mouthful of phlegm. He didn’t tarry any longer and directly grabbed a cat-eared girl, the latter was bitterly begging for mercy while she was dragged into the tent. The other Asiatic cat-eared girls that were kneeling on the ground, were all scared silent. As they saw the crying, tear-stained face of their female brethren, they knew that they would never be able to see her the next day.

 ……………

“Seriously, why did they arrange for me to go shopping with you?” Ji Bai, who was walking ahead with his hands in his pockets, grumbled resentfully.

“This is the punishment chosen for us. If possible, I also wouldn’t want to travel together with a cockroach just when I finished my dinner,” She responded as she slowly walked behind Ji Bai’s back. Lin raised her eyebrows, and took out a note that was filled with handwriting, she seriously examined it.

“There aren’t enough vegetables. We need to go to the food market first.”

“Why do I have to listen to you?” Ji Bai ostentatiously turned his head and asked.

“I didn’t say that you have to come with me. It’s up to you whether you want to follow.” After she finished, Lin didn’t look at Ji Bai as she minded her business and walked ahead.

“…Tch!”

 …………

“Here, you hold this for now.” Lin wore a pair of woolen hand gloves as she passed a sack full of bok choy and spinach onto Ji Bai.

“Huh? Should I just obediently carry it because you said so? Why should it be me in the first place?” Ji Bai had a face of scorn plastered all over him.

“That’s because you’re a male. For the time being, at least,” After Lin stared at Ji Bai for a moment, she opened her mouth and said this.

“Hey! What do you mean by ‘for the time being’?! Do you believe I won’t peel your skin off with a knife if you don’t explain it clearly?” Ji Bai subconsciously took over the food basket and wished to continue the argument, and yet, Lin turned her body and left, leaving empty air in her stead instead.

“Next up, we need to get an assortment of raw materials,” Lin didn’t even look at Ji Bai as she said this.

“…Did this female parasite really regard me as some sort of free labor?” The edge of Ji Bai’s mouth twitched several times.

Before he could raise his legs and go after her, a crisp, clear, and ear-shaking boom resounded. The two, who were haggling and conducting a business transaction just moments ago, had unconditionally laid on their stomach. A series of minute cracks began to show on the spotlessly white ceramic roof…
