Chapter 60: The Swooping Grim Reaper
“Charge my brothers! For the god of war, Prague!” Fear and anger aroused the troll foot soldiers’ courage. The heroic death of their commander would not stop their thirst for battle. As a race termed as the ‘barbaric beasts’, the troll foot soldiers were far more fearless compared to any other civilized race.
They stringently followed the teachings of the ancestor whom they worshipped, Prague. According to him, life and death were freely decided by the heavens, while armor was considered as the savior of cowards. Either one died on the battlefield or returned triumphantly from it. That was the final outcome a troll ought to meet.
“Followers of the War God, listen reverently to the war drums of Prague! That detestable fear shall burn to nothing under our hot blood!” The fear that had arisen earlier in the troll foot soldiers’ hearts quickly transformed into an inexhaustible supply of fighting spirit. As the eyes of each and every troll turned red, they swung the weapon in their hand and roared.
“Seriously, what an annoying bunch of fearless barbarians.” Bai Ji slightly frowned after shooting a glance at the swarm of troll foot soldiers. Swinging her bone scythe, she casually sent it flying towards the chest of a troll foot soldier 3 meters away. Following which, she retracted her arms and hooked the troll foot soldier, whose body was now devoid of flesh and blood, over to her. A blood-colored ball of primordial magic gathered in her tiny hand was then placed into its body.
Once all of that was done, she twisted her scythe and flung the shriveled corpse that was hanging on her curved blade towards the quickly advancing troll foot soldiers.
【Lasombra Style – Corpse Bomb】
“BING BANG BOOM!”
Like combustible fuel, an explosion whose color was a mixture of crimson and black went off within the ranks of troll foot soldiers. By the time the trolls were able to process what had been going on, they found themselves flying outwards. The bottom half of their body was spewing out blood and had appeared in their eyes.
“Haaaaa!!” As adrenaline had already rushed into their brains, the troll foot soldiers did not care that the companions around them had been blasted into smithereens in moments. Their giant axes brought with it a violent gale as they charged towards Bai Ji’s side and sent it smashing towards her.
Seeing that, Bai Ji unhurriedly leaned forwards on the scythe’s shaft and repelled the troll foot soldiers. With one hand holding onto the tip of the scythe, Bai Ji once again hooked and pulled a retreating troll foot soldier towards herself. The other hand then pushed a fully-converged, blood-colored ball of primordial magic into his abdomen. Following that, Bai Ji swung around the handle of the scythe and ferociously kicked the troll’s chest with her legs.
“Bounce!” The troll that had been sent flying with her kick bumped and carried a good number of his comrades with him. Following this, a dark scarlet explosion bloomed in the middle where the troll foot soldiers were.
“B**tch!!” It was unclear whether they had been driven crazy by fear, or was truly fearless to the point they had forgotten themselves. The two magic attacks which had greatly reduced their number had not impeded the troll foot soldiers’ advances in the slightest. With their bodies tainted with their comrade’s blood, the troll foot soldiers had nothing but madness in their eyes.
“How uncivilized and crude.” Bai Ji disdainfully narrowed her eyes as she looked at the trace of bodily fluid that had splashed onto her body. Her bone scythe swung in a wide and seamless circle, slicing off the heads of the troll foot soldiers surrounding her with precision and sending them all flying.
As she looked at the swathing masses of troll foot soldiers advancing towards her, a trace of respect was reflected in her scarlet eyes.
The phenomenon of ants biting an elephant to death was something that could only happen in nature. In this harsh world however, it was nothing but a pipe dream for one to win using quantity instead of quality. This was especially true among the different demon species.
Bai Ji slowly pounded the scythe in her hands into the earth and inserted it into the ground. Following that, she climbed onto the pole handle of the scythe and placed her feet onto the blade edge of the scythe. Before the troll foot soldiers’ weapons could attack her, she stretched her legs, expanded her demon wings, and flew up into the night skies.
“Eh?! What the heck is that?!” Seeing the girl fly ever higher into the night sky and gradually turn into a black dot, the troll foot soldiers were momentarily puzzled.
Could she be running away?? But why didn’t she bring along her weapon with her?
…………..
“Teacher, are you alright?” On top of the city walls, the remaining knights were still fighting desperately like a pack of trapped beasts.
A young knight helped a veteran knight bloodied from head to toe that was on the verge of falling unconscious.
“I’m fine. I just lost an arm, that’s all. It’s nothing much, except that it will probably be a tad inconvenient to scratch my itch in the future.” Leaning on his long sword, the veteran knight strenuously stood up and said indifferently. His left arm, including that of his upper arm, had actually been chopped down. What was left was a sinister-looking scar that was currently bleeding incessantly.
“Teacher…We have lost.” As he looked at the sinister-looking trolls that were gradually approaching them, the young knight said in a trembling voice.
“Sigh…” The old knight looked at the students behind him that were now a great deal less…They were his students…No, knights. Knights that had resolutely chosen to defend this area and fight to the death.
Currently, there was no one that deserved this word more than them.
Fatigue filled the eyes of the old knight, who currently resembled an elderly man past his prime.
He didn’t dare look at the cold floor, as it seemed to crawl with faces he was all too familiar with. It was almost as if they would actually rise up alive in the next instant.
At the very least, I have resolutely defended the area in my final moments with them. That could be considered as following the knight’s creed, right? Venerable Radiant Knight…
“…?! Teacher, look! Is that…”
“Hmm??” The veteran knight followed the gaze of his student and attentively looked in his direction. What he saw couldn’t help but make him freeze.
“W-What is that?!”
The only scene that greeted them in the night sky was a silhouette not too far from them. Her exquisite and delicate body, as well as her fluttering silver hair, were illuminated by the crescent moon, causing her to look like an angel that was flawless, holy, and pure.
However, the black demon wings behind her back, as well as her cold apathetic eyes, caused the knights that were present at the scene to shudder.
“V-Vampires?!” In that instant, the veteran knight held a feeling of despair.
The girl didn’t look in their direction. Rather, she was seemingly looking down at something below her. As her demon wings expanded, the glow in her scarlet eyes bloomed brightly.
A cloak made of pitch-black flames that fitted the sun-shielding black wings on her upper body wrapped around her. Like a scythe-wielding grim reaper, she swooped down towards the ground.
………….
“…Holy crap! What is that thing?!” After the girl had flown away for some time, a spate of uneasiness occupied the troll foot soldiers’ heart. Suddenly, a tangible image of the ‘Grim Reaper’ began to swoop down towards them. The primordial magic was so stiflingly intense that it caused the troll foot soldiers to fall into a state of extreme panic.
“Hurry up and run!!” As the dark grim reaper hovered over the sky, it completely obscured the moonlight. The auditory impact that it carried, as well as the massive aura coming from the primordial magic that it conjured, instantly shattered the courage of the troll foot soldiers.
And just when they were planning to scatter like wild animals, they found that their body was already unresponsive to their commands. Unknowingly, their necks had already been wrapped up with blood-colored chains. The other end was attached to bone sickle, the sickle that, previously, had been inserted into the ground.
“Wha…!” The trolls despaired and kneeled as their knees gave way. They could almost hear the massive bone sickle sneering as it carried with it a countless number of blood chains.
The grim reaper in the air gradually turned bigger without pause. Then, as if it had arrived on schedule, it stopped.
【Lasombra Style – Swooping Grim Reaper 】
“Roar!!”
Fierce, black flames burnt the earth. Not a corpse could be found on the decimated earth, only traces of blue souls that were absorbed from all directions into a human skull on the bone scythe.
