Chapter 4: The chivalry order
It was noon. The overbearing and blazing sunlight radiated from the sun over the horizon. Ji Bai sat on the flight of steps leading to a small shop, shielding himself against the scorching sun.
He had just disappointingly walked out from the ninth shop. At this moment, his feelings weren’t so good. He had even begun to suspect that if he were to continue to rush about, he would eventually obtain the achievement of being rejected by nine hundred and ninety-nine shops.
It was really difficult to find a job. It was much more difficult when compared to the action that had established his name, the act of slaying the vampire duke. Ever since morning till noon, he hadn’t made a single progress at all…
“Growl…” Under the bright sun, Ji Bai felt his mouth and tongue drying up, while his stomach simultaneously rumbling with hunger. He was drenched in sweat, having rushed around in all directions earlier.
Great. I have made virtually no headways into finding a job, yet I have to replenish my calories again. Ji Bai couldn’t help but roll his eyes. He let out a long sigh, and stood up.
Guess I have no other choice but to have some food and save the thinking for later.
“A hero without money is no hero at all.” This sentence was truly the most insightful proverb that the ancients with their rich life experiences had come up with. Ji Bai had finally managed to understand why some vermins had said it was impossible for them to find work while laying their hands on people’s cars.
However Ji Bai was definitely not gonna commit crimes like theft. If one were to describe him using his own words, it would certainly be something like ‘He was of sacred martial knight descent. His integrity for his occupation, as well as the knights creed he had sworn to, meant that he would not allow his conscience to hold him in contempt. That’s why he could not whore…cough cough, engage in theft.”
In fact, as a knight representing the sacred martial association, Ji Bai had indeed possessed a number of bountiful saving accounts. However, the debit card to them had been stolen by a group of vampires after he was taken as a prisoner of war.
“Hey mister, we are holding a big discount for our restaurant opening today. Every customer who eats a meal here will all enjoy a fifty percent off their bill! Do you want to understand more?” Ji Bai was currently brainstorming ways to get a job until he was disrupted by a neatly attired waiter wearing a bright and beautiful smile.
Ji Bai looked at the waiter ahead of him and glanced at the antique restaurant whose appearance resembled a taoist temple. He then looked at the little guy ahead of him, who seemed to have fallen silent.
“Do you think I look like those people that can afford these expenses?” Ji Bai said while tugging at the cheap T-shirt on his body.
“Who knows, aren’t there wealthy people that go swaggering into five star restaurants with a crude attire on? While they are settling the bill, they will toss an agate at the faces of the front desk staff staring at them in contempt, while saying ‘No need for change.’ Tycoons called this ‘a slap in the face’, something about fortune being in the east and west bank1…Forget about it, it’s impossible to keep up with the thoughts of the rich.”
“It’s alright to go in there and have a look even if you’re penniless Mister?” The waiter still had a smiling face on him.
“How much does a dish cost on average?” Ji Bai’s eyes were squinted as he touched his head.
“Eh? It’s not expensive. A lunch set only costs around a thousand yuan2 on average…”
“See you later.” Ji Bai hadn’t waited for him to finish his sentence before waving his hands and leaving. Just the cost of a lunch set is around a thousand yuan? Isn’t it no different from daylight robbery?
Ji Bai strolled around until he found a small store that suited his net worth and peacefully sat down. “Boss give me a bowl of vegetarian noodles, without meat or vegetables please.”
“Got it! But lad, are you sure you don’t want to add meat in it? Youngsters at your age are currently going through puberty and need…”
“There’s no need, boss. I am currently on a diet.” Ji Bai waved his hands.
“Oh, so be it then, although the meat and vegetable toppings are free of charge here…”
“Ah! In that case, please add them in!”
“…” The corners of the boss’s lips twitched. Turning his head, he saw the cheap T-shirt the young guy was wearing and let out a slow sigh.
It sure is difficult to be a young teenager nowadays. At his age, other kids are probably still at school enjoying their youthful campus life.
Ji Bai, who was sitting near the entrance of the shop, was unaware of what the boss was thinking in his mind. He looked around at his surroundings, and laid his eyes at a few people dressed in their formal knight attires. They were sitting close to him inside a luxurious restaurant and were discussing something.
A badge which was engraved with a cross in an exquisite shield was worn on each of their chest. It was as if they were deliberately placed on the most conspicuous spot to allow people to pay attention to it.
That badge was something that Ji Bai undoubtedly recognised. It wasn’t only that; it was also something he was very familiar with. The chivalry order that the badge signified was something that the “Radiant Knight” had single handedly created.
